The largest nineteenth-century building in Castroville, the former convent of the Sisters of Divine Providence is appropriately French in character with its sloping mansard roof and the two-story arcaded porch across its long facade. On the convent's property stands the first schoolhouse, a two-story masonry building one room deep with two doors on each floor leading to four separate rooms and with an exterior stair to eliminate using space in the interior. The building has a two-story frame front porch and is topped by a shingled cupola.
