German immigrant Edwin Oscar Finn, a master mechanic and smithy of buggies and wagons, had this Italianate building constructed of local Colleton bricks covered with scored stucco to simulate stone. Double doors on the side allowed for carriages and buggies to enter and leave the showroom floor. The Finn family lived on the second floor. Their son, Alfred C. Finn, was born in Bellville and became one of Houston's most notable early-twentieth-century architects, known for the Gulf Building ( HN16) and the San Jacinto Monument ( AT24). The blacksmith shop next door was built in the mid-1800s and was in continuous use until the 1980s.
