Lynch Building

1878, 1881; 1975 rehabilitated. 340 S. 2nd St.

The first stone mercantile building constructed in Albany is the east half of this two-story structure; the Masonic Lodge was on the second floor. Smooth-faced stone pilasters support segmental arches spanning three wide openings on the first floor and contrast with the rock-faced blocks of the walls. Second-floor windows have segmental arches with dropped keystones. The west section, at the S. Main corner, was built in 1881, with the Live and Let Live Drug Store below and Knights of Pythias hall above. First- and second-floor openings are rectangular.

At 308 S. 2nd, the boxy two-story modern house (2010) with a stuccoed finish and roof overhangs by Richard Wintersole shares a site with the 1907 Claude Walraven House and two corrugated-metal-clad studios also by Wintersole.
