Vine Street Houses

-A A +A
c. 1890, William Lang. 1415, 1429, 1435 Vine St. (NR)
  • Vine Street Houses (Richard W. Longstreth)

This trio of Lang residences shows a progression from the asymmetry of the Tedford House (1889), at 1415 Vine, with its off-center porch tower, to the studied symmetry and crisp gables of the Grove House (1890) at 1435. In between, 1429 Vine (1890), dominated by a gable with Queen Anne detailing, is stronger and cleaner than 1415. The conversion of this group to multi-unit dwellings has complicated the understanding of their interiors, but the surviving stair halls are labyrinths of lavish, dark wood-work.
