COTTMAN HOUSE

-A A +A
c. 1884. 11695 Beckford Ave.
  • (Alexander Heilner)

This two-story frame house built for Isaac and Priscilla Cottman offers an example of nineteenth-century African American home ownership in Princess Anne. It was renovated by the Somerset Historical Trust starting in 2006 as a rental property and sold to private owners in 2019. The Trust raised the house onto brick piers and added a one-story rear ell. Next door at 11685 and at 11679 Beckford are the two remaining of five matching c. 1870 tenant houses formerly on this block. They each had a two-story one-bay section joined at the side to a one-and-a-half-story section, with the house standing on brick piers and the side gable roofs covered with sheet tin.
