Reflecting the fishing heritage of St. Michael’s congregation, Canizaro designed eye-catching scalloped roofs resembling seashells for this circular, exposed-concrete church and its smaller connected chapel. The church’s nondirectional form acknowledges liturgical changes recommended by Vatican II to create a unified, less hierarchical space for worship. The Emil Frei studio of St. Louis crafted the tall stained glass panels depicting the twelve apostles returned from fishing. Sections of the windows were destroyed by Hurricane Katrina, but the Frei studio reproduced them from original drawings and reinstalled them with moveable sashes so they can be moved to safety in another storm surge.
