A pencil-thin office building fit snugly between two conventional-sized modern office blocks, 816 Connecticut Avenue illustrates how a replacement for a single town house in the downtown area might be handled. The Washington architectural firm of Shalom Baranes Associates, which is experienced in enlarging and renovating historic buildings, designed the eleven-story building in a modern style, with each story defined by horizontal stone strips and stone pilasters at the ends. Above the first two stories, the glass panes are pushed out at the center, forming a V-shaped window. Above the eleventh story, a glass-enclosed penthouse offers one of the finest views in the city.
