Savannah Gardens continues the collaboration of Mercy Housing Southeast (see 11.7), the City of Savannah, and the Community Housing Service Agency. Set on a forty-four-acre site previously occupied by temporary defense housing, this design retains that development’s innovative sweeping arcs and adds some traditional City Beautiful-inspired design features, with a central park and formal axis more typical of late-twentieth-century New Urbanism and lined by historicist three-story apartment blocks in a variety of colors and materials. Outside the area defined by E. and W. Crescent drives, rows of single-family houses follow the lines of traditional bungalows.
