OLD DEPOT MUSEUM (YAZOO AND MISSISSIPPI VALLEY RAILROAD DEPOT)

-A A +A
1907, Daniel H. Burnham and Co. 1010 Levee St.

In its symmetrical three-part facade, central monumental Ionic portico, parapet end walls with paired chimneys, two-stage cupola, and Flemish bond brick, this large two-story building exemplifies Colonial Revival design. Pedimented end pavilions are set off with quoined corner pilasters, and a one-story semicircular Tuscan porch is on the south elevation. Designed for the Illinois Central Railroad (which owned the Y&MV) the depot closed to passenger traffic in 1932 but continued to house railroad offices until 1977. Located on the lowest terrace above the Mississippi River, the building has been flooded several times. The Old Depot Museum opened in 2012, focusing on Vicksburg’s transportation history and the Siege of Vicksburg.
