Crosby Commercial Block (Citizens National Bank)
This tall, but well-proportioned, three-story commercial block features a limestone base, rusticated stone pilasters at the corners, brick spandrels between symmetrical sets of windows, a projecting stone cornice, and an entrance pediment supported by two small Doric columns. Originally the bank featured a mezzanine-level “Farmers’ Room” on the second floor, with offices on the third level. Like many local banks in North Dakota, the economic collapse in the 1920s forced reorganization or closure. The building operated successfully from 1954 to 1974 as the Nifty Shop selling ladies’ ready-to-wear clothing, but the dispiriting cultural transition from local retailing to centralized national chain stores is a recurrent theme among so many well-managed small-town businesses.
