Stratford House (Stratford Hall, Danville Female College)

-A A +A
Stratford Hall, Danville Female College
1883, Main Hall, Albert Lawrence West; Thomas B. Fitzgerald, contractor; 1910, Stanhope S. Johnson. 1119 Main St.

Now a retirement and continuing care community, this institution was a women's school from 1854 until 1974. This three-story brick Second Empire building was the college's principal building. The projecting central tower is crowned by a convex mansard roof. A massive front porch with giant coupled Doric piers and a triglyph and metope frieze added in a 1910 remodeling partially obscures by the porch.
