Houses

-A A +A
1930s and later

Thanks in part to their original sturdy construction, nearly all of Eleanor's homestead houses remain. Several relatively unaltered examples stand on both sides of Chestnut Street, south of Roosevelt Boulevard. The one-andone-half-story houses with small, rectangular eyebrow windows lighting their garrets are easily recognizable. The abiding impression of all the houses is one of smallness, and most now have additions. Original garages, far too small for modern cars, have been replaced by larger ones or by carports, or have been incorporated into living space. A number of new dwellings, many of them “manufactured homes,” now mingle with the original houses.
