Palapala Ho'omau Church

Accessed via a dirt drive at the first left after mile marker 41 traveling south from Hana, Palapala Ho'omau Church sits in a garden of exotic tropical flora. This simple apana church constructed of plastered fieldstone stands as yet another reminder of mid-nineteenth-century evangelistic fervor. The church was renovated in 1965 and now features a gabled portico and a small gabled niche on its east wall. The niche holds a modern stained glass window depicting Jesus in a traditional Hawaiian feather cape, a symbol of royalty.

The site is frequented by visitors who come to pay their last respects to Charles Lindbergh, who was interred in the church cemetery in 1974, having lived his final years on the Hana coast. The iliili (waterworn, rounded stones) paving his grave are frequently taken by souvenir seekers and need to be periodically replenished.
