This small village was established in the late eighteenth century around the Burwell-Morgan Mill (CL13) and later became a settlement for freed blacks. The village provides a remarkably unaltered view of a small rural community with a variety of stores, schools, mills, churches, and houses from different historic periods and architectural styles. The small, one-and-a-half-story, gable-roofed frame house on Millwood Road just west of Bishop Meade Road is typical of several houses built by freedmen after the Civil War. Often the only decorative elements are found in the turned porch spindles and brackets.
