Falmouth is the principal settlement on the Rappahannock River above the falls from Fredericksburg. It has always been in the shadow of the larger city. Settled about 1727, it had several prosperous mills until the mid-nineteenth century, when the railroad bypassed the town to the south. Much of the old town has been destroyed, but it contains several items of interest.
