Chambers County Courthouse

Isolated in an open square, the Chambers County Courthouse rises two stories above a partially exposed basement. Austin architect Curtis endowed it with the attributes of PWA modernistic courthouses. Allegorical relief panels symbolize the sources of the county's wealth, of which the greatest was oil. A spare modernistic scheme of colored marbles ornaments the public spaces. The perimeter of the square is outlined with widely spaced live oak trees. Anahuac's main street, Washington Avenue, looks like it came straight out of a Farm Services Administration photograph of the 1930s.
