Antioch Missionary Baptist Church is the oldest historically African American church building in Houston. Until the 1950s it was the centerpiece of the institutional sector of the Fourth Ward African American neighborhood, which existed from the end of the Civil War until it was incrementally demolished between the mid-1950s and mid-1970s. The gray, stucco-faced brick church contains the worship area on the second floor above classrooms and gathering spaces. Two Houston African American architect-builders, Allen and Jones, were responsible for the building's initial design and the first of several rounds of expansions and alterations.
