Named for Philip Doddridge, U.S. congressman from Virginia, this county was created in 1845. According to the 1860 census, it had a population of 5,203. In 1900, thanks to growth fueled by the oil and natural gas boom, Doddridge County had a population of 13,689. With little exception, subsequent counts have declined. The 2000 figure was 7,403. The topography is almost universally hilly, and the county is almost entirely rural.
