Now the residence of the president of the University of Mary Washington, Brompton is sited prominently on what is known as Marye's Heights. The original house received extensive additions, including a dramatic Roman Revival flat-roofed Ionic portico, c. 1824, when a local businessman, John Lawrence Marye, purchased it. The portico received its pediment during repairs c. 1866, after the house was badly damaged by Civil War action. In 1946 the state purchased and restored the house.
