Coopers Rock State Forest

-A A +A
1936–1942. I-68, exit 15

Although the architectural resources of this largest West Virginia State Forest are in Monongalia County, the interstate interchange by which they are approached is in Preston County. The forest contains one of the state's most significant groupings of Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) structures, all beautifully integrated with their spectacular natural setting, but each displaying a great deal of individuality. Coopers Rock, a natural sandstone outcropping overlooking the Cheat River valley, had long been regarded as one of the area's prime scenic attractions, but it was virtually inaccessible until the state acquired the property in 1936. CCC workers first cleared a trail, then constructed permanent facilities.
